:: OCEAN UNDERSTANDING
Ocean Leadership has an active education component
designed to provide educational materials to help students and teachers bring ocean science into
the classroom.
Deep Earth Academy
Deep Earth Academy (formerly JOI Learning) is the education arm of the scientific ocean
drilling program. Through professional development workshops, scientist-educator partnerships,
and production of on-line and print materials based on scientific research expeditions, Deep
Earth Academy works to strengthen students’ mathematics, science and analytical skills. Our
vision is Teaching for Science, Learning for Life™ – using scientific ocean drilling to
provide a multidisciplinary approach to earth science education.

Diversity
Diversity programs and partnerships provide learning opportunities, mentoring, fellowships
and other horizon-building experiences for minority students to explore careers in the Earth
System sciences.

Marine Geoscience
Leadership Symposium
The Marine Geoscience Leadership Symposium crosses the boundaries between marine geology and
geophysics and provides early career researchers with insight into leading a successful
research career. This new endeavor will provi
de a forum for presenting cutting-edge research to peers and distinguished members of the
scientific community, as well as provide valuable leadership training, including knowledge of
U.S. science agencies and effective techniques to approaching decision makers and legislators.

National Ocean Sciences
Bowl (NOSB)
The National Ocean Sciences Bowl is an academic competition for high school students designed
to stimulate interest in the ocean sciences.
Established in 1998, NOSB has grown to 25 regional competitions with approximately 2,000
students from almost 300 schools participating annually. NOSB has reached over 16,000 students
and teachers throughout the nation, inspiring many to become the next generation of marine
scientists, policy makers, teachers, explorers, technicians, and ocean advocates.

Ocean Sciences Educators Retreat (OSER)
Every two years, Ocean Leadership surveys member institutions to gather data on recruitment,
admissions and retention from the nation’s leading ocean science and technology graduate
programs. The data are subsequently compiled and discussed at a biennial Ocean Sciences
Educators Retreat (OSER) for graduate deans and other educational administrators. At the
Retreat, Ocean Leadership program administrators discuss trends and challenges in graduate
level training in the ocean sciences.
